SISSA Women in Mathematics is an annual event on the role of women in mathematical research, open to the whole SISSA community and beyond.
Since 2021, SISSA has celebrated the International Women in Mathematics Day, held on 12 May in memory of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to receive the Fields Medal, with an event of its own. The aim is to create a space for open discussion: how women experience academic careers in mathematics, which obstacles still stand in the way, and what institutions can do about them.
Each edition brings back to SISSA three of our alumnae who now hold research positions in Italy and abroad. They share their personal paths and their science, offering role models and practical perspectives to students and early-career researchers, as well as food for thought to more senior members of the community.
The event is usually held in hybrid format and is open to everyone interested, not only mathematicians.
SISSA Women in Mathematics is organised by the SISSA SIAM Student Chapter, together with the Mathematics Area and SISSA mathLab. It is also supported by SISSA Medialab.
